Evangelical: an Increasingly Meaningless Term
Dear Sovereign Redeemer and other friends,
A generation or more ago, the term “evangelical” was a highly significant and meaningful term. Today it means little more than “not-Catholic-and-also-not-mainline Protestant,” with the theological diversity represented being breathtaking, to say the least.
The theological diversity represented by the term a century ago was much more narrow, meaning that many who consider themselves – and are considered by others – to be evangelicals would have never fit the common usage of the term a century ago. It means something very different now. That does not, of necessity, have to be a bad thing, but we should at least be aware of the shift (I would actually say drift), and think about the implications.
I will attempt to do just that in a few upcoming posts.
Your brother,
Jason
